C&S Wins Six ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards
C&S Companies are proud to announce that the firm received six awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter, including the Empire Award, given for the best project in New York state.
Receiving the Empire Award and a Diamond Award is the Midler Avenue brownfield remediation in the City of Syracuse. C&S was the environmental engineering consultant for the redevelopment of this 22-acre former manufacturing facility, which was contaminated with high levels of chlorinated solvents. This was the first site in New York state to fully implement a combination of two cutting-edge remediation techniques. The site is now home to retail complex anchored by a Lowe’s home improvement store. According to ACEC, “the Empire Award is given to the ‘Best Project in New York State.’ This award is for an engineering project that brings value to a community in New York State. The award will be evaluated based on contributions to the economic health of an area, sustainability, innovation and creativity.”
The Syracuse City Hall Commons Sustainability Showcase was awarded a Platinum Award. The Syracuse City Hall Commons Atrium was transformed into a Sustainability Showcase to display the many current and planned sustainable development projects in Central New York, and to educate the public on the many sustainability initiatives in the area. It also provides a meeting area for community groups, and promotes sustainability to visitors, local design professionals, and the general public.
C&S’s rehabilitation of County route 55 (Yoummell Road) bridge over Deer River in St. Lawrence County was also received a Platinum Award. This bridge project included an innovative fiber-reinforced polymer bridge deck that will provide reliable service to the traveling public and low maintenance for the county.
A Gold Award was given to the Chautauqua County–Jamestown Airport runway safety area improvements. This project significantly improved safety at the airport and included the relocation of a road and the construction of a 525-foot tunnel for another road. A unique feature of this project was the use of 230,000 tires from the Chautauqua County landfill that were assembled by Chautauqua County and used for road subgrade.
C&S received a Silver Award for renovations to Building 100 at Griffiss International Airport. The project involved converting a 100,000-square-foot former military hangar into a modern aircraft maintenance facility with upgraded administration space and improved energy efficiency. The project included installation of one of the largest high-expansion foam fire suppression systems in the U.S.
A Silver Award was given to the Allegany Wastewater Treatment Facility, a state-of-the-art system designed to collect, convey, and treat wastewater generated within the newly formed Allegany service area. The project provides one of the few large scale subsurface wastewater discharge systems in the northeast.
